Electrochromatic Mirrors

The exterior mirrors feature a sleek, aerodynamic look which also reduces wind noise and now incorporate turn indicators. Being electrochromatic mirrors, they automatically dim to quell the annoyance of headlamp glare from following motorists at night.

Radar technology scans the road ahead

The distinctive front grille design is smart as well as stylish. A radar sensor is discreetly incorporated into the grille. It monitors the road ahead as part of the Active Cruise Control (ACC)* and Pre–Collision safety System (PCS)**.

Rear view camera with Rear Guide Assist***

For easier reversing, you have the guidance of a Rear View Camera discreetly mounted above the license plate. Select reverse and a colour image of what's immediately behind your rear bumper appears on the Electro Multi Vision (EMV) screen. Rear Guide Assist gives you a more precise indication of distances for easier parking and reversing.

Feel the roadholding of a flat underbody

Not only does the body styling contribute to sleek aerodynamics for a low drag and better fuel efficiency. The flat underbody has been optimised to enhance airflow and create negative lift, so it contributes to improved roadholding.

See clearly through water repellent windows

Special coatings on the front side windows accelerate dispersion of water droplets, for better visibility on drizzly days.

Rain sensing wipers are visibly better

To allow you to keep your mind focused on your driving, the GS is equipped with rain sensing wipers. If it begins to rain, sensors in the front windscreen automatically switch on the windscreen wipers, so you don't have to.

The comfort of UV reducing glass

The windows in the doors, rear door quarters and the rear window are a UV–reducing tinted glass. This reduces sunlight into the cabin for a cooler cabin, increased comfort and visibility.

To keep you informed, a power meter replaces the customary tachometer on GS 450h. It is exclusive to Hybrid models.

Multi Information Display

You'll constantly know which power systems are operating via the multi–information display on the console. It tells you whether you're being driven by the petrol engine, the electric drive motor, or both. It also advises when the regenerative braking system is active.

Refined Interior Treatment

Refined design around the EMV display, and a metallic finish on the meter faces and gear shifter face plate complements the clean, contemporary look of the GS interior. The steering wheel incorporates controls for the audio, cruise control, phone, Multi Information Display and speech commands.

Glare free instrumentation

For optimum instrument readability even in bright sunlight, there's an Electro–Chromatic Device (ECD) system installed in the meter glass of the dash. It controls sunlight reflection by day and enhances the readout visibility at night, allowing the instrumentation to keep you informed at all times.

The blissfully quiet running of the GS450h provides the perfect environment to appreciate an audio system by world renowned designer Mark Levinson. The power of a high performance V6 works with a high–power electric drive motor to deliver ground–breaking power, yet earth–friendly efficiency, fuel economy and low emissions. That's better for the planet, and more exhilarating for you.

A high performance 3.5l V6 is just the beginning

The Lexus Hybrid Drive begins with a high performance, all–alloy Quad Cam V6 with both direct and port injection. It produces an impressive 218 kW of power. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT–i) optimises the inlet and exhaust valve timing for increased efficiency.

Hybrid System Employs Two Electric Motor/Generators

In addition to its powerful Quad Cam V6 engine, GS 450h has two high–output electric motor/generators. The first one acts a power generator and also serves as the starter motor for the petrol engine. The second motor/generator, also known as the electric drive motor, supplements the power of the petrol engine to drive the rear wheels. The maximum output of the petrol engine working with the electric drive motor is 254 kW.

Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission

Feel the seamless acceleration and quiet running as your speed builds continuously without gear changes. This advanced transmission also ensures the petrol engine and the electric motors work as one. As well as blending the output of two power sources, the E–CVT in GS 450h has the added sophistication an eight–speed sequential–shift feature.

Braking energy is harnessed by Regenerative Braking

When you slow down or apply the brakes, a system known as Regenerative Braking captures the kinetic energy that is wasted in a conventional vehicle. This energy is then converted into electrical energy and stored in the battery for later use.

A long life battery

GS 450h stores electric power for future use in a 'Nickel Metal Hydride Battery' an advanced battery engineered to last many times longer than a conventional car battery. It is charged by the generator and by Regenerative Braking. Placing the battery over the rear axle helps ensure a near ideal 50/50 weight distribution.

Fingertip control with Electric Power Steering

Enjoy reduced steering effort when parking yet greater road feel at highway speeds, thanks to an advanced Electric Power–assisted Steering system combined with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS).

Electric Power Steering dispenses with hydraulic hoses and pumps, and conserves fuel when driving on straight roads.

VGRS tailors the relationship between steering wheel angle and the steering angle of the front wheels according to vehicle speed. It provides quick steering response when parking and maximum steering feel at highway speeds.

Comfort and control with Adaptive Variable Suspension

For a more stimulating drive, you can fine–tune suspension damper settings to 'Normal Mode' for everyday driving situations, or to 'Sport' for superior handling and stability, while maintaining superb ride comfort – all at the touch of a button. AVS also optimises vehicle posture and helps smooth ride on rough road surfaces.

Reassurance of Pre collision safety

For added peace of mind, the Lexus Pre–Collision safety System (PCS) can help reduce collision injury and damage. A radar sensor in the front grille constantly scans for objects in front of the car. If the system determines that a collision is unavoidable, it retracts the front seatbelts and signals the Brake Assist system to increase braking force and hence help reduce collision speed. At the same time, Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) control is activated, optimising shock absorber damping force and suppressing nose dive.

Relax as Active Cruise Control watches ahead

For more relaxed highway cruising, Active Cruise Control (ACC)** monitors the road ahead of you. In addition to its role in the PCS, the radar sensor also operates as part of the Active Cruise Control (ACC). You can simply set your preferred highway speed via touch controls on the steering wheel, or you can set your desired following distance from the vehicle in front. Then, should the radar detect that distance is closing or detect another vehicle in your path, Active Cruise Control decelerates the vehicle and even applies the brakes if necessary. Your nominated speed is resumed once a safe following distance can be maintained.

The confidence of Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management

Should you encounter a loss of traction, an advanced Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system offers a greater sense of control. It integrates GS450h's braking, throttle and steering controls, for enhanced drivability.

Adaptive Front Lighting looks around corners

To give you greater night vision, GS 450h has powerful halogen high–beam headlamps and projector–type High Intensity Discharge (HID) low–beam headlamps. On winding roads, the Adaptive Front–lighting System (AFS) redirects the low–beam lamps so you can literally see around corners.

Safer stopping Electronically Controlled Braking

Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB2) ensures more precise distribution of brake force, wheel by wheel, for more controlled braking – including front and rear independence for Electronic Brake–force Distribution (EBD) control. In addition, electronically controlled braking provides optimal operation of the various brake–related technologies within GS 450h's Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system.

Feel at ease with 10 SRS airbags

For added reasurance, GS 450h has a comprehensive package of ten SRS airbags. It has dual–stage driver and front–passenger SRS airbags, large size front–seat side airbags, SRS knee airbags to help protect the lower limbs of the driver and front seat passenger, SRS rear side airbags help protect the rear outer passengers, and full–length side curtain–shield airbags.

Active headrests for added protection

In the event of a low-speed rear end collision, the front headrests spring forward to stop the backward movement of your head and help ease injury caused by whiplash.
