Distinctly hybrid

The RX 450h will feature a range of stylishly distinctive design elements that set the hybrid apart. The design cues include a unique front bumper and silver grille design, blue accents on the headlight and taillight lenses and a unique fog light surround design. The elegant blue highlights also appear on the Lexus emblem, vehicle badging, engine cover, key fob and a chrome feature strip that runs the length of the doors and features the chrome and blue word ‘hybrid'.

Smart Card for easy access

Smaller than a credit card and just 3.35mm thick, the Smart Card provides fast and convenient access to the RX 450h through the all new touch activation pad design. With only the slightest touch on either the top or bottom of the door handles you can lock and unlock the doors of the car. In the rare event of a system failure, the Smart Card comes with a conventional metal key concealed within the card.

Second generation L-Finesse design

The all-new RX line is the first Lexus SUV to be completely designed using the Lexus L-Finesse design philosophy and the first to showcase the second generation of L-Finesse design. L-Finesse design principles combine leading edge design with elegance, and the second generation of L-Finesse stays true to these ideals while incorporating a sharper design appearance. Elegant wheel designs

The RX 450h Sports and Sports Luxury vehicles features unique fifteen spoke 19-inch wheels while the Prestige model features five spoke 18-inch wheels. Both versions build on the leading-edge Lexus design and enhance the arresting appearance of the RX 450h.

A striking colour palette

The second generation L-Finesse design on the RX 450h is complemented with a choice of eight colours including one exclusive colour, Quartz, and three new colours – Blue Pearl, Sapphire, and Metallic Silver. LED headlamp technology

Offering excellent illumination and improved light distribution, the RX 450h Sports Luxury uses low-beam light-emitting diode (LED) headlamp technology. In addition to providing optimum vision at night, LED headlamp technology offers reduced power usage and increased bulb life, with the lamps designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

Large mirrors with turn indicators

The exterior mirrors provide an expansive view of the area behind you. Indicators have also been incorporated in the exterior mirrors to help other motorists to see you.

The simplicity of the Lexus Remote Touch

To make driving even easier, Lexus has placed key vehicle functions at your fingertips via a Lexus Remote Touch controller on the console. With the simplicity of a computer mouse, you can access up to 20 functions with fingertip precision. So, for example, you can plot your route with the Satellite Navigation with just a few clicks of the controller. It's yet another example of advanced Lexus technology for enhanced driving pleasure, allowing seamless interaction between you and the vehicle, while allowing you to concentrate on your driving.

Enhanced climate control

Determined to offer a vehicle that allows you to create the perfect cabin temperature even faster than previous systems, Lexus engineers implemented several improvements including a newly developed air conditioning unit. The RX 450h's climate control system features a unique electric compressor that operates seamlessly with maximum efficiency. It also uses a humidity control sensor to automatically reduce or increase the air temperature as required in the cabin. Whatever the conditions are outside, you can be sure the temperature will be just right inside the Lexus RX 450h.

A new standard in crystal clear audio

The RX 450h Prestige and Sports models feature a 12-speaker Lexus premium sound system. The Sports Luxury gives you the added dimension of a 7.1 channel surround sound system with 15 speakers by renowned audiophile designer Mark Levinson. Speakers have been placed in symmetry across the cabin, including higher mounted front and newly added rear door tweeters to direct sound towards passengers, resulting in a crisp, clear listening experience. Both systems feature an in-dash six-stack CD player capable of MP3, WMA and CD-R/RW playback and, a new feature in the RX, an AUX jack that enables you to connect portable music players like iPod®s***.

Remain focused with Head-Up Display

To help you keep your eyes on the road ahead, a Head-Up Display (HUD) in the Sports Luxury model positions key information on the windscreen just above the dash panel. This means you can view your speed, simplified navigation arrows, audio settings or the Pre-Collision Safety System brake warning, in a clear display, all without having to take your eyes off the road.

Illuminated entry welcomes you aboard

As you approach the vehicle after dark, a puddle light beneath each exterior mirror illuminates your path. Then as you step inside, a neatly choreographed lighting sequence guides your way and provides a warm welcome.

Another Lexus hybrid world first

The RX 450h represents a world first with the introduction of an Atkinson Cycle V6 engine in a hybrid, delivering a ride that optimises economy without sacrificing performance. Combining the Atkinson, or high expansion, Cycle with a 3.5 litre dual VVT-i V6 engine, Lexus continues to lead the field in hybrid technology.

The intelligent Lexus Hybrid Drive system

The Lexus RX 450h combines a sophisticated purpose-developed Atkinson Cycle 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a 123kW electric drive front motor, which effortlessly work together for a thrilling yet environmentally sensitive driving experience. When you press the start button and push the brake, the electric power is silently activated. As you accelerate, the power source switches seamlessly to the petrol engine when extra power is required. A second 50kW AC permanent magnet motor powers the rear wheels during take-off and acceleration. The RX 450h has the ability to travel up to two kilometres at low speeds on electric power alone*.

The ease of Electric Power Steering

When you're driving straight ahead, no steering assistance is provided which reduces fuel consumption because, unlike conventional systems, Electric Power Steering only provides assistance when you turn. Being speed-sensitive, it also ensures maximum assistance while parking as well as greater road feel at higher speeds.

Electronically controlled braking

Equipped with an electro-hydraulic braking system, the RX450h delivers greater brake-force distribution because the hydraulic pressure of the brakes on each wheel is controlled independently and progressively. This means the reassurance of outstanding vehicle control whether you're driving in city traffic or tackling tougher off-road terrain.

Regenerative braking

When slowing down or braking, energy is lost in a normal vehicle – largely through the brakes creating heat. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system allows for energy-saving regenerative braking on both the front and rear axles. Regenerative braking captures the vehicle's 'kinetic' energy and converts it into electrical energy, which is then stored in the hybrid battery. This electricity is later put to good use by the electric drive motors to propel the vehicle.

Rear View Camera* for greater visibility

When you put the car into reverse, the Rear View Camera is immediately activated and a clear picture of the area behind the rear bumper can be seen on the EMV display*. In addition, Rear Guide Assist provides reference lines to help you judge distances.

More advanced Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM)

To assist you should you encounter challenging driving situations, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, VDIM, is fitted as standard. This advanced system has been programmed to provide greater integration of not only the engine output, braking, traction control and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) but the steering as well. So in emergency situations, VDIM determines the most effective combination of preventative measures to help you maintain control of the vehicle.

The reassurance of 10 airbags

Surrounded by 10 SRS airbags, including first-in-class dual SRS front seat knee airbags and new rear seat SRS side airbags, the RX 450h offers exceptional protection in an emergency.

Knee airbags help in two ways

You have the support of knee airbags which reduce the risk of lower limb injury for the driver and front passenger. In addition, by deploying in front of the lower leg, they help restrain each occupant from slipping under the seatbelt for more effective restraint.

Active front seat head restraints

In a rear end collision, the headrests have been designed to move closer to the passenger's head to provide support and help reduce the effects of whiplash type injuries.

Active Cruise Control keeps your distance

At highway speeds, if another vehicle crosses your path the Active Cruise Control (ACC) on the Sports and Sports Luxury models automatically slows your vehicle and applies the brakes if necessary to help maintain a safe following distance**. When the vehicle moves away, your preset cruising speed is resumed.

A twin chamber front passenger airbag

The dual stage front airbags not only deploy in accordance with the severity of collision impact. On the passenger's side is a dual chamber airbag which secures the passenger's upper body to help disperse the physical impact.

Pre-Collision safety System (PCS) keeps watch

A radar sensor in the front grille watches the road ahead in the Sports and Sports Luxury models and relays information to the Pre-Collision safety System (PCS). If the system determines that a collision is imminent, Pre-collision Brake Assist (BA) supplements your braking effort for improved stopping performance. Then, the Pre-collision Seatbelts are activated for improved occupant restraint.
